News Successful final conference for the INOGATE project 'Technologies and methodologies for reducing gas losses of the Central Asian gas transit system'

Over 70 participants, including representatives of all the beneficiaries, of the European Commission, other INOGATE projects and the European gas industry, attended the final conference in Brussels of the INOGATE project ‘Technologies and methodologies for reducing gas losses of the Central Asian gas transit system’. The project was supported by the EU as part of the ‘energy security’ pillar of the Baku Initiative. The 18-month project successfully demonstrated that relatively low cost surveys of existing compressor stations, metering stations, and pipelines, using state-of-the-art detection equipment were able to identify locations and volumes of gas leak, enabling repairs which represented a very significant return on the capital involved. 700 km of pipeline were surveyed, revealing 33 significant leaks representing 9.3m. m3 gas loss per year (about $1.4m). Examination of a Soviet-era compressor station and its adjuncts discovered 53 leaks, representing 13m. m3 of loss per annum. See conference report here.
