Russian and Tajik leaders discuss energy co-operation
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met in Moscow with his visiting Tajik counterpart Emomali Rakhmon to boost cooperation in the energy sector and solve regional problems. The Sangtuda-1 hydropower plant, whixh is a joint project with Russia, will soon be commencing.

"The presidents discussed bilateral relations and agreed to continue joint work, including energy cooperation, within the framework of an intergovernmental commission," Press Secretary Natalia Timakova was quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency as saying. The Sangtuda-1 hydropower plant, which was seen as a successful example of the bilateral cooperation, will be started up soon, Timakova said. The heads of states of the two countries also pledged to speed up geological survey of gas deposits in Tajikistan and to strengthen cooperation in military technology, she said. "Regional affairs, particularly the settlement of the situation in Afghanistan, were discussed separately," she said.
