News Russia proposes new Energy Charter Treaty

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will propose a new Energy Charter Treaty to the April G20 meeting in London. Although 51 states have signed the existing Treaty, Russia believes it is too generous to consumers over producers, and has not ratified it. The present system was therefore unable to prevent recent disputes between Russia and Ukraine, which disrupted European gas supplies.
