News Gas-generated electricity in EU may not improve global emission situation.

The EU's commitment to reudce emissions by 20% by the year 2020 is seen as an opportunity by Russian gas exporter Gazprom. However, speaking at the European business Summit in Brussels, EU energy commissioner Gunther Oettinger, whilst acknowledging that "increasing the gas share of the EU's energy needs by just 1% would reduce CO2 emissions by more than 3%," commented: "If we were to import more gas from Russia and [use it to] produce environmentally friendly electricity, and then the Russians generate their electricity with coal, we would end up with a good eco-balance in Europe but we won't have done anything for climate protection."
