News EU seeks solution to Ukrainian gas transit impasse

The European Commission has discussed the issue of the Ukrainian debt for Russia’s gas with International Financial Institutions (IFIs), government officials from Russia and Ukraine and representatives of Gazprom and Naftogaz Ukrainy.

A press release from the EU Delegation in Russia says the meeting, with the participation of the EBRD, EIB, the IMF and the World Bank, “has made good progress in identifying the key issues of concern and elements for solutions including possible financing arrangements.”

In a statement issued jointly with the IFIs, the European Commission underlined the importance of ensuring security of supply and uninterrupted transit to European consumers during the winter period and pledged to remain “actively engaged” in facilitating a solution.
