News EU progresses energy market liberalization

The European Parliament has agreed further major liberalisation of EU energy markets. The decisons involved mean:

  • Encouragement of full splits between generators and distributors, and the establishment of powerful independent regulators to prevent market abuse where this does not come about
  • Reform of tariffs to help needy families
  • Introduction of 'smart meters', allowing choice of cheap energy rates, by 2020 in 80% of households
A special clause gives governments the right to prevent non-EU companies buying into energy distribution networks.
