News EU Commissioner to address Black Sea energy conference in Odessa

Commissioner Günther Oettinger, responsible for Energy, starts a two-day visit to Ukraine by addressing the international conference "Promoting energy security and investment in the Black Sea Area", due to be held in Odessa today, 27 July. The Commissioner will deliver a keynote speech together with Ukraine's Fuel and Energy Minister Yuriy Boyko. The agenda of the visit will also include bilateral meetings with the Energy Minister and with Prime Minister Mykola Azarov.

The Conference in Odessa, jointly organized by the Energy Charter Secretariat, the Organisation of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung/Ukraine, will examine the key energy issues facing the countries of the Black Sea and develop concrete proposals designed to provide a new impetus to energy projects in the region.

A press release from the Energy Charter said the conference would focus on the question: "How can the Black Sea region's full energy potential be achieved given the substantial barriers that have impeded energy projects over recent decades?" Two interrelated issues will be addressed, said the press release, "that of energy security and investment in energy projects, particularly foreign direct investment."
